OneLake File Explorer and FabCon FOMO

I've known for almost a year that I would miss out on FabCon 2026.It was scheduled the week that most of the St. Louis area schools were on spring break, and while I love all things Fabric and all things data, I love time with my family more. I've therefore found myself playing catch up and having a bad case of the FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) from FabCon. I've been reading blogs and notes and everything I can get my hands on to help learn as much as I can about what was shared at this year's FabCon. One of the most exciting things I've learned is that one of my favorite Fabric features was finally announced as general availability, the OneLake file explorer!

I remember learning about the OneLake when I was first introduced to the Fabric product a few years ago. I understood the definition of OneLake as a tenant wide Lakehouse, but it still felt nebulous until I could lay eyes on the OneLake file explorer. Ever since learning about it, I always use a visual from OneLake file explorer to explain OneLake storage to new clients onboarding to Fabric.

If you haven't used it yet, the experience in OneLake file explorer feels identical to using OneDrive for your documents. It contains a file structure with folders for all of your workspaces and fabric items stored in their respective workspace folders. It has capabilities for drag and drop, copy and paste, and any other file edits that could normally be done within a file-based system.

I've found no shortage of use cases for this simple but powerful tool. One Lake file explorer can be used to edit small lookup tables within Fabric. It can be used as a file drop location for clients who are new to the cloud, and it can be used for local development tools that expect a filesystem.

I just love the Power and Simplicity of this tool. You can read more about it at the official MS Learn documentation page:
